Today we will be adding by making 10. 

For example: When adding 6 + 7 we would first add 4 to the number 6 to make 10 and then we would add 3 to the 10 to give us the answer 13. This will make more sense when you see the video. 

 

Parents:

Children add numbers within 20 using their knowledge of number bonds.

It is important that children work practically using ten frames and/or number lines to help them see how number bonds to 10 can help them calculate. Get them to draw a tens frame or number line and use anything you have to hand that they can use as a counting resource (pasta, buttons, straws, tooth picks...…).   

They will move towards using this as a mental strategy.
